Paving Pedestals for Raised Terraces and Roof Decks

Paving Pedestals for Raised Terraces and Roof Decks

A paving pedestal is a support system that elevates tiles, slabs or decking boards off the substrate – creating a level, stable surface on uneven or sloped decks.

At PaveSystems, our PavePad pedestals are manufactured from 100% recycled PEHD plastic at our facility in Denmark, combining structural strength with a clear sustainability commitment.

Our pedestal systems are used by contractors, architects and developers working on residential terraces, commercial balconies and rooftop installations across Northern and Western Europe.

Paving Pedestal Systems - The Stackable Approach

PavePad works on the stackable principle – similar to building with Lego. Rather than a single threaded stem adjusted by tools, height is built up by combining PavePads of different thicknesses. This makes installation straightforward, requires no specialist tools and allows height to be added or reduced at any stage of the project.

The PavePad range covers the following standard heights:

  • PaveShim 1.5 mm – for fine-tuning. Can be cut or pulled apart by hand into quarter, half or three-quarter pieces and inserted at any layer
  • PaveDamper 4.5 mm – for use with uneven or crooked tiles. Noise-reducing; absorbs footsteps and vibration
  • PavePad 7.5 mm – for adjustment and levelling, not as a starting layer
  • PavePad 15 mm – the recommended minimum starting height, ensuring space for water and dirt to reach drainage
  • PavePad 45 mm – self-draining; can be divided into halves (sides) or quarters (corners)
  • PavePad 90 mm – for achieving significant height quickly, improving workflow and economy

The minimum recommended starting height is 15 mm. This ensures sufficient clearance beneath the paved surface for water and debris to move freely to drainage points.

Paving Pedestals for Terraces, Balconies and Roof Decks

PavePad pedestals are suitable for a wide range of applications:

  • Garden and roof terraces with tiles or wooden/composite decking
  • Balconies requiring a level, stable floor surface
  • Roof decks where the membrane and insulation must be protected
  • Projects requiring drainage beneath the paved surface

Each PavePad can carry loads of up to 1,200 kg per unit, making them suitable for the vast majority of residential and commercial applications. The pedestals protect your roof membrane against direct wear and UV radiation, while the open structure drains rainwater freely between and beneath the slabs – preventing standing water and inhibiting algae growth.

PavePad is also well-suited to wood and composite decking. The PEHD material allows battens to be screwed directly into the pad without special brackets or pre-drilling.

Pedestal Paving System - What to Consider When Specifying

When selecting a paving pedestal system, the key considerations are:

  • Height range required – from 15 mm clearance upward, built by stacking standard PavePad units
  • Fine-tuning – use PaveShim (1.5 mm) to achieve the exact height needed
  • Load rating – PavePad withstands up to 1,200 kg per unit
  • Surface type – PavePad works with tiles (including granite, lava and ceramic), natural stone and timber or composite decking
  • Temperature performance – rated from -50°C to +100°C

Each corner of a PavePad can be adjusted individually to handle tiles with a thickness variation of up to 5 mm, making it possible to achieve a level surface without tile-by-tile shimming.

Why Choose PaveSystems Pedestals?

PavePad pedestals are produced locally in Denmark from 100% recycled PEHD – a high-density polyethylene that is moisture-resistant, acid-resistant and fully recyclable at end of life. Unlike metal alternatives, PEHD requires no surface treatment and performs consistently across a wide temperature range.

PaveSystems works around one core principle: every PavePad is designed with reuse and recyclability in mind.

The material is non-toxic, durable and can be recycled into new products when eventually replaced – making PavePad a responsible choice for projects with long-term sustainability targets.

Installation requires no specialist equipment or knowledge, and no adhesives or mechanical fixings are needed. The weight of the slab or decking holds the system securely in place.
